A Mumbai-based diamond export company has been accused of religious discrimination after it denied employment opportunity to a young man because he follows Islam.
MBA graduate Zeshan Ali Khan who was looking for a job in a leading export house had sent his resume to Hare Krishna Exports Pvt Ltd. But the response he received from the company was not only shocking but gave a communal angle to the whole episode.
The email received by Zeeshan read: “Thanks for your application. We regret to inform you that we hire only non-Muslim candidates.”
The screenshot of the email received by Zeeshan KhanZeeshan later narrated his experience on Facebook followed by a ‘regret’ mail from the company after his post generated sharp reactions and criticisms.
Mahendra S Deshmukh, Associate VP & Head-HR, wrote to Khan: “We would like to clarify that the company does not discriminate against candidates based on gender, caste, religion, etc. Any hurt caused in the matter is deeply regretted.”
“This erroneous email was sent by my colleague Mrs Dipika Tike who has joined recently and is still on training,” Deshmukh added in his mail.
Lawyer and activist, Shehzad Poonawalla filed to NCM, MHA, CM Maharashtra in order to bring to their notice the alleged blatant case of discrimination against a Muslim job seeker Zeeshan Ali Khan on illegal religious ground. According to latest reports, the NCM has ordered an inquiry regarding this whole episode.
