In an extraordinary development, the Mumbai Police have summoned CBI director Subodh Jaiswal in connection with a phone tapping scandal.
According to reports, the cyber cell of the Mumbai Police have sent the summon to Jaiswal via e-mail, asking the latter to appear before them on Thursday next week.
A report by NDTV said that the phone tapping case was related to a report prepared by IPS officer Rashmi Shukla on the corruption in police transfers in Maharashtra during her time as the head of the state intelligence department. Jaiswal was the Director-General of Police in Maharashtra at that time.
According to news agency PTI, it was alleged that phones of senior politicians and officials were tapped illegally during the inquiry and the report was leaked deliberately.
Jaiswal heads the CBI, which falls under the jurisdiction of the central government headed by BJP Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Maharashtra has a coalition government headed by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray of the Shiv Sena, who’s been running the state government in alliance with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party.
Jaiswal is a 1985-batch IPS officer of Maharashtra cadre, who was appointed as the CBI chief in May this year. Before assuming charge as the CBI Director, Jaiswal also headed the Mumbai Police.
