Mangalore police arrests 13 Bajrang Dal members for Monday’s ‘moral policing’ violence

Police in Mangalore have arrested 13 people in connection with the torture and humiliation of a Muslim boy on Monday.

Mangaluru police commissioner, S Murugan when contacted, said that 13 persons belonging to the right wing organisations have been arrested.

The police inspector of Pandeshwar police station Dinakar Shetty said that that a case has been filed under IPC section 307, 395, 397, 143, 147, 148 and 149 ( attempt to murder, dacoity, unlawful assembly, rioting and rioting using a armed weapon).

He said “ 13 people are taken into custody and investigation is still going on.”

Meanwhile, the boy and the girl have recorded contradictory statements in the respective FIRs.

Shakir  told that he had known the girl for a month and gone to meet her as she had asked him for a loan of Rs 2000. He rubbished the claims of attacking her modesty saying that he had only gone there to give her the money and she never travelled with him. He said that a group of 10 – 15 people stopped him in front of KMC as he was talking to the girl before stripping him naked, tying to a pole and subjecting him to merciless thrashing.

The girl in her FIR alleged that Shakir had been troubling her for sometime forcing her to call/message him adding that he even ‘threatened her to circulate certain images of her if she didn’t agree to his demands.’

Police has registered an FIR under section 354 of the IPC , trying to outrage a woman’s modesty.

Speaking, she said  “On Monday Shakir offered to drop me home around 5:30 PM and tried to force me inside the car when I refused.”

She said that she screamed for help when he began to force her inside the car. Shakir was her team leader in a local supermarket they were working in.
