LIVE UPDATES: Tamil Nadu minister dies days after testing positive for COVID-19

Tamil Nadu Agriculture Minister R Doraikkannu has passed away aged 72, days after testing positive for COVID-19. He died at a private hospital in Chennai on Saturday night.

A statement by the hospital said, “With deep grief, we announce the sad demise of Honourable Minister for Agriculture R Doraikkannu.”

Doraikkannu. a three-term MLA, had tested positive on 13 October. He was shifted from a government medical college hospital in Villpuram to Kauvery Hospital later.

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, according to news agency PTI, condoled his detah and said that he was saddened to know about the demise of the minister. “He handled Ministry of Agriculture with full dedication and engraved his strong mark. His untimely demise is an irreparable loss to the people of Tamil Nadu and particularly to the AIADMK party,” Purohit said in his condolence message.
