Kathua gang-rape: #UnfriendBJP campaign gains momentum on Facebook

Amidst considerable outrage over the gang-rape and murder of 8-year-old Asifa in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua and rape allegations against BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Uttar Prades, Facebook users have launched a campaign to unfriend BJP supporters from their contact lists.

Using hashtag #UnfriendBJP , users are removing friends, who supported rape accused in Kathua and Unnao cases, from their Facebook contacts. Others are also urging their friends, who may be BJP sympathisers, to unfriend them because’ BJP has become inhumanely brutal.’ One user Krishna Kumar wrote, ‘Your hands are stained with blood.’

Users are posting the screenshots of similar messages in multiple languages. They’ve also created memes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-publicised ‘Beti Bachao’ campaign.

Modi on Friday had finally broken his silence amidst international outrage over the two rape cases. However, on the same day, one of his MPs, Meenakshi Lekhi, was furiously defending the two BJP ministers in Jammu and Kashmir for their decision to attend the rally in support of the rapists of Asifa. Lekhi had said that the two ministers were misled and it was not a crime to be misled.

However, hours later, the two BJP ministers, Chandra Parkash Ganga and Lal Singh, were sacked from the cabinet of Jammu and Kashmir government after the alliance partner and Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti reportedly made it clear that their continuation in the government had become untenable.
