A Kolkata court has sentenced three convicts charged with gangrape to death sentence.
In an extraordinary verdict the Additional Sessions Judge Sanchita Sarkar handed out capital sentence to three convicts, while giving life imprisonment to three others.
Those given death sentence are Saiful Ali, Amir Ali and Ansar Ali.
Three others- Emanul Islam, Bhola Naskar and Aminur Islam were served life terms.
The convicts of famous Kamduni gangrape case had confessed to their crime while recording their statement before the magistrate.
This is the first time rape convicts have been sentenced to death for over 12 years.
In June 2013, a college student was kidnapped on her way home from class. She was taken to an isolated factory compple before being gangraped and murdered in Kamduni village.
The incident had caused huge public outrage. Even on Saturday before the verdict was pronounced, members of pro-left student union clashed with police outside the court premises.
According to PTI, the judge rejected arguments for not giving death sentence to the three.
The judge called out the names of each of the convicts, who were produced in the packed court room, before pronouncing the sentences.
Saiful Ali, Ansar Ali and Aminul Ali were found guilty under sections 376(d) (gangrape), 302 (murder), 376A (inflicting injury which causes death of a woman) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC.
The judge found the other three guilty under sections 376(d) (gangrape), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of IPC.
