After Ishrat Jahan, Triple Talaq petitioner’s lawyer Nazia Elahi Khan too joins BJP

Days after triple talaq petitioner Ishrat Jahan joined the BJP, her advocate Nazia Elahi Khan too formally joined the saffron party.

“As you all know that Ishrat Jahan had joined our party few days back. Her lawyer and renowned social activist Nazia Elahi Khan is also joining BJP today,” West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh was quoted by PTI.

Ishrat, one of the petitioners in the triple talaq case, had joined the BJP last week, with the party felicitating her for fighting against the practice. Her husband had divorced her over the phone from Dubai in 2014 by uttering ‘talaq’ thrice.

The controversial Islamic practice was struck down by the Supreme Court on 22 August. The five-judge bench of the apex court had declared the instant talaq illegal through majority 3:2 verdict.

Along with Nazia, around 150 Muslim women joined the saffron party. The Centre’s Narendra Modi government had passed the Triple Talaq Bill in the Lok Sabha last week thereby criminalising the practice of instant talaq.
However, on Thursday, it found a lot of opposition from opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha, where the BJP lacks the numerical advantage. There are also reports that the  Modi government has reportedly agreed to send the Triple Talaq Bill to the Select Committee after it faced huge opposition from parties in the Rajya Sabha.
