India’s top medical body writes to PM Modi, wants Ramdev to be booked under sedition

India’s top medical body, the Indian Medical Association, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding that Patanjali founder Ramdev be booked under sedition law. This was days after Ramdev was first seen mocking Covid warrior doctors before claiming that vaccines were ineffective to treat coronavirus.

The IMA said in its letter, “We appeal to your highness, to take appropriate action against individuals viciously propagating the message of fear on vaccination and challenge the government of India protocols for treatment for their vested interest in their company products. This in our opinion is a clear-cut case of a sedition and such persons should be booked immediately without any delay under the charges of sedition.”

The IMA’s letter to PM Modi came hours after its Uttarakhand unit sent a defamation notice to Ramdev demanding a written apology and a video message countering his controversial comments made in the recent past. The IMA had said that it will initiate legal action claiming Rs. 1,000 crore in compensation if he failed to meet its demands within the next 15 days.

Earlier, the IMA had demanded Ramdev’s prosecution after the controversial Hindu godman termed modern medicines ‘stupid science.’ Faced with a legal notice from the IMA, Patanjali had issued a clarification. Ramdev himself had retracted his statements after Health Minister Harsh Vardhan request him to withdraw his controversial remarks.

However, another video of Ramdev emerged recently when the self-proclaimed yoga guru was flaunting his power by challenging the law enforcement agencies to arrest him. He had said that nobody’s father had the courage to arrest him. Ramdev had thundered with little respect for the rule of law, “Khair arrest to unka baap bhi nahi kar sakta Swami Ramdev ko (Anyways, even their father can’t arrest Swami Ramdev).”
