Indian women hailed even after defeat to Great Britain in bronze medal hockey match at Tokyo Olympics

The Indian women’s hockey team lost to Great Britain in the bronze medal match at Tokyo Olympics on Friday but earned plenty of plaudits for their spirited performance all through the games.

This was the first time in history that the women’s hockey team had reached the semi-final stage of the Olympic games. The Indian team had narrowly lost to Argentina 1-2 in the semi-final. On Friday, they put up a tough fight against the British team but once again lost the match by a wafer-thin margin.

Indian fans took to social media to applaud the Indian women for scripting history at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “The exceptional performance of the Men’s and Women’s Hockey Team has captured the imagination of our entire nation. There is a renewed interest towards Hockey that is emerging across the length and breadth of India. This is a very positive sign for the coming times.”

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted, “An incredible performance by our women’s hockey team! You all played well and gave it your best! You have made India proud.”

The Haryana government has announced a financial reward of Rs. 50 lakh each to the nine members of the women’s hockey team that took part in Tokyo Olympic games. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said, “Haryana Government will award Rs 50 lakhs each to the nine members of the Olympics women’s hockey team who are from Haryana. I congratulate the Indian team for their praiseworthy performance at the Tokyo Olympics.”

Earlier, the Punjab government had announced that it would give Rs. 1 crore each to all men’s hockey players, who won the bronze medal in Tokyo after a gap of 41 years.
