Union Minister Smriti Irani has written a moving post on the sudden death of veteran BJP leader and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. Irani’s post revealed how the late BJP leader had planned a meal out with the union minister before her tragic death.

Irani wrote, “I have an axe to grind with you Didi . You made Bansuri pick a restaurant to take me for a celebratory lunch. You left without fulfilling your promise to the two of us.”

Bansuri is Sushma Swaraj’s daughter.

In another post, Irani wrote that the real tribute to Swaraj would be to work towards the upliftment of women in society.

Both Irani and Swaraj were cabinet colleagues during Narendra Modi’s first term as Prime Minister. Swaraj had declined to contest elections this year owing to poor health. She also did not accept any ministerial responsibilities after PM Modi won a historic landslide in this year’s parliamentary elections.

Modi had termed Swaraj’s death as his personal loss. He wrote, “Sushma Ji’s demise is a personal loss. She will be remembered fondly for everything that she’s done for India. My thoughts are with her family, supporters and admirers in this very unfortunate hour.”

The prime minister also visited the residence of his former cabinet colleague and met Swaraj’s daughter and her husband, Swaraj Kaushal. The last rites of Swaraj will take place in Delhi today with full state honours.
