Popular Haryanvi singer Mamta Sharma was founded murdered in the fields of Baniyani in Rohtak district on Thursday. There were several injuries from a sharp weapon on her neck.

The alleged murder of the 45-year-old popular singer comes just three months after another folk singer Harshita Dahiya was shot dead in Haryana. Baniyani is the native village of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Mamta Sharma had left home early on Sunday morning with her associate Mohit Kumar, reported NDTV. Her son Bharat told police in a statement. “On Sunday morning, she left home with an associate artiste Mohit for a programme at Gohana’s Gaushala. When she was on the way in a car, somebody in another car indicated to stop the car. They took her with them. We could not contact her after that.”

Bharat told Indian Express that his mother used to give performances at jagrans (religious functions) for the last six years.

The SHO of Kalanaur police station said that Sharma’s body may have been dumped in the field after she was murdered at some other place.

Crimes against women have experienced an alarming increase in Haryana in the last few months. Earlier this week a college student was kidnapped in Gurgaon and gangraped. This, according to a report by Times of India, was the sixth reported rape in Haryana in four days beginning 13 January, when the body of a 15-year-old girl, who was latter termed as Haryana’s Nirbhaya, washed up at the bank of a canal in Jind.
