Hanuman Mishra, a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh, has died days after testing positive for coronavirus. He was being treated for COVID-19 at Lucknow’s Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.
Mishra’s death comes amidst a dangerous surge in the pandemic with Uttar Pradesh being one of the worst affected states. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath himself is ins elf-isolation after he tested positive for coronavirus.
Such is the pandemic in Uttar Pradesh that the Allahabad High Court had to order the government to impose lockdown in five cities namely Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Kanpur and Gorakhpur.
The Supreme Court Bench headed by CJI SA Bobde, however, stayed the high court’s order taking note of the BJP government’s argument against the lockdown.
