Former Olympic medallist Saina Nehwal has courted a huge controversy for tweeting about the BJP’s election win in the Uttar Pradesh Panchayat polls.
This was after Saina congratulated Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the BJP’s win in the just-concluded local body polls. She wrote, “Hearty congratulations for thumping victory in Zila Panchayat Chairperson election in UP @myogiadityanath sir #ZilaPanchayatElectionUP2021.”
However, her tweet evoked angry reactions from opposition party leaders and netizens, who felt that Saina should have steered clear of politics as she was a sports icon. Jayant Chaudhary of RLD tweeted, ” Government shuttler recognises BJP skill in smashing peoples’ verdict! I think voters need to play a subtle drop shot on celebs trying to influence their decisions!”
