Vijakumar Krishnappa, a doctor by profession, is in America on a fellowship to learn from experts there. But last week, he was arrested and realsed with electronic tagging after a girl found him sexually assault her while travelling in United flight.
According to the 16-year-old, she was travelling in a New Jersey-bound United airlines flight when she fell asleep. She woke up after she felt some movement on her thigh. She found out it was the fellow passenger, Krishnappa, who was touching her inappropriately. According to the federal complained, Krishnappa quickly removed his hand upon being caught out by the girl.
The girl then went back to sleep before waking up to realise that Krishnappa was groping her. After he stopped, the complaint says, the girl asked the flight attendant to be moved to some other seat.
Once the flight from Seattle landed at Newark Liberty International Airport, the girl called her parents.
While she did, Krishnappa left the airport, Johnny McCray, an attorney for the girl’s family, told The Washington Post.
The family was very angry that the flight crew were not able to get the man detained at the airport. The FBI, which is responsible for crimes during the air travel, later traced the man using the detail from the flight manifest.
Krishnappa was arrested and charged with knowingly engaging in sexual contact with a minor female on the same day.
The authorities have not been able to ascertain Krishnappa’s nationality yet but his name suggests his Indian ethnicity.
A United spokeswoman told Washington Post, “The safety and security of our customers is our top priority. We take these allegations seriously and continue to work closely with the proper authorities as part of their review.”
