Was FIR against army filed in consultation with Nirmala Sitharaman? Subramanian Swamy wants PM Modi to seek explanation from defence minister

BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy on Saturday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek an explanation from Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on claims made by Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Mufti, while speaking in the assembly, had reportedly claimed that the decision to file an FIR against the Indian army in the killings of three civilians in Shopian was taken in consultation with Sitharaman.

“After the killings I immediately spoke to the defence minister and she was very positive. She told me that I should take action if any carelessness or anything wrong has happened. It’s after that we registered an FIR and ordered a magisterial inquiry,” Mufti was quoted by NDTV.

Swamy took to Twitter to ask PM Modi to seek an explanation from the defence minister as to why she had not contradicted Mufti’s claims yet. He wrote, “It is time for PM to call for an explanation from Ms. Sitharaman as why she has not contradicted Mehbooba’s claim that RM okayed FIR.”

Three youth were killed in Ganowpora village of Shopian district in south Kashmir on 27 January, when security forces opened fire after an army convoy reportedly came under a stone pelting attack. Two of the victims were identified as Javaid Ahmad and Suhail Ahmad. The third civilian, identified as Rayees Ahmad Ganai, had died after being admitted in hospital for treatment.

The army had said that it fired in self defence.
