Speech-impaired woman allegedly raped by watchman at Gwalior shelter home for months, foetus burnt

In yet another horrific episode of brutalities being committed against women at a shelter home, police in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior said on Friday that a 24-year-old visually and speech-impaired inmate of a shelter home was allegedly raped by its watchman. The cops, according to a report by news agency PTI, said that the victim was also forced to undergo abortion and the foetus was burnt.

The cops have arrested at least nine people including three doctors in connection with the crime, said Bilaua police station in-charge Inspector Amit Badhoria.

The incident came to light only after the district office of the Madhya Pradesh Women and Child Welfare Department received a complaint. The foreign-funded shelter home is located on the outskirts of Gwalior. The victim’s roommate reportedly told the police that the watchman, identified as Sahab Singh Gurjar had allegedly raped the victim repeatedly for over two months. The roommate, who is visually impaired, used the help of an interpreter to record her witness.

The investigating team were quick to alert the local cops, who wasted no time in registering the case and arresting some of the accused.

“When the woman got pregnant, the shelter home director Dr B K Sharma Wednesday got the victim to terminate her pregnancy forcibly and also burnt the foetus to destroy evidence,” Badhoria was quoted by PTI.

This comes close on the heel of a similar incident from Bhopal, the state capital of Madhya Pradesh, where the cops had arrested a retired armyman for allegedly sexually abusing the disabled inmates of a shelter home run by him. At least three inmates had died due to severe injuries inflicted upon them through rampant sexual attack.

The latest revelations come weeks after a similar incident in Bihar Muzaffarpur, where dozens of girls had complained of being raped, tortured and even allegedly murdered by the owner, Brajesh Thakur. Thakur, who was very close to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, was later arrested.

Social Welfare Minister Manju Vwerma too had to resign after allegations surfaced that he too frequently visited the shelter home and sexually abused the shelter home inmates.
