Smriti Irani faces flak after she ‘refuses’ to pay parking fee in posh Delhi market

Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani is not new to controversy. Her controversial past has resulted in her removal from two ministries under the current Narendra Modi government.

She was first sacked as Union HRD Minister before being unceremoniously removed from the Information and Broadcasting ministry for her controversial decisions. Now the minister is in news for wrong reasons, once again.

According to media reports, Irani visited a market in Delhi’s posh Rajiv Chowk neighbourhood on Tuesday. However, upon her return from the E Block area, those managing the parking asked her to pay the parking fees, which she refused to pay, said a report by Zee News, a pro-BJP media outlet.

This reportedly resulted in a war of words between those accompanying Irani and the parking attendants. The minister later left without paying the parking fees, said the Zee News report.

Meanwhile, the cops have reportedly said that no complaint were filed against the minister or her staff.

The topic became a subject of intense social media conversations. Priyanka Chaturvedi of Congress wrote, “Mantriji refuses to pay Rs. 20 parking charges instead threatens the attendant saying mantri hoon dekh loongi. Hahahahaha end of #VVIPRacism ? Also any reason why @eenadu_english deleted the video?” Journalist Swati Chaturvedi simply asked, “This is unbelievable is it true @smritiirani?”

Another user wrote sarcastically, “Smriti Iranji did the right thing by not paying the parking fee! We, BJP owns Bhumi Devi too, & Iraniji doesn’t require to pay any charges for parking her car on Bhumi Devi’s lap! Only Anti Nationals has to the pay parking fine!”

The controversial minister, who has also been in the news for her questionable educational qualifications, felt that there was no need to break her silence on serious allegations of VVIP racism. She, however, had time to wish her cabinet colleague, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, on her birthday, when she tweeted on Wednesday, “Greetings to my effervescent, hard working colleague @HarsimratBadal_ on her birthday. May God bless her with good health & a long life.”
