A Delhi Delhi court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in a case related to the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar in January 2014.
Even though the Delhi Police had opposed Tharoor’s bail, Additional Sessions Judge Arvind Kumar allowed his plea by asking him to furnish a bond of Rs 1 lakh.
Reacting to the development, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP, Subramanian Swamy, said that there was nothing to celebrate for Tharoor. Swamy told ANI, “There is nothing for Shashi Tharoor to celebrate. He is not in Tihar jail, he can sit with Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, they are also bail-wallas.”
Swamy also said that the court had specifically directed him not to travel abroad. He said, “Yes, he can’t go out of the country and see all his girlfriends in various parts of the world.”
Last month, the court had had taken cognisance of the charge-sheet filed by the police in the case. In May this, the 62-year-old parliamentarian from Thiruvananthapuram was charged with abetment to suicide in the death of his wife.
He has now been asked to appear before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal on Saturday, reported IANS.
51-year-old Pushkar had died in January 2014 in a Delhi hotel under mysterious circumstances, days after she alleged that Tharoor was having an affair with a Pakistani journalist.
The medical board constituted to submit a report on the death of Sunanda Pushkar had failed to make any conclusions in its findings submitted to the Delhi Police.
In its report submitted to the SIT last year, which is probing the case, the medical board, after studying the findings of FBI and AIIMS had said the cause of her death is inconclusive. The Delhi Police had first claimed that the 51-year-old was poisoned, and registered a murder case in January 2015, without naming any suspect.
