BJP MP Varun Gandhi has warned against the attempt to give a communal colour to the recent massacres of farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri. Gandhi, who is a BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit constituency, said the ‘Hindu vs Sikh battle’ narrative to the recent violence was ‘immoral & false.’

The outspoken parliamentarian tweeted, “An attempt to turn #LakhimpurKheri into a Hindu vs Sikh battle is being made. Not only is this an immoral & false narrative, it is dangerous to create these fault-lines & reopen wounds that have taken a generation to heal. We must not put petty political gains above national unity.”

Varun has been vocal through his social media posts against his party’s government since the Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s SUV mowed down protesting farmers, leaving four dead.

Sharing the video of the minister’s car running over protesting farmers, Varun had tweeted, “This video of farmers being mowed down deliberately in Lakhimpur Kheri would shake the conscience of anyone. The police must immediately take note of this video and arrest everyone including the owner of the vehicle, those sitting inside and other involved.”

He had added, “The video is crystal clear. Protestors cannot be silenced through murder. There has to be accountability for the innocent blood of farmers that has been spilled and justice must be delivered before a message of arrogance and cruelty enters the minds of every farmer.”

The BJP is facing widespread condemnation after many farmers were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri recently. The violence started when a group of farmers in Tikonia area of Lakhimpur Kheri tried to stop Union Minister Mishra and UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya from visiting the region.

Also crushed under the car was 35-year-old journalist Raman Kashyap. His body was discovered many hours after the carnage.

After facing considerable criticism for inaction, the Uttar Pradesh Police finally arrested the minister’s son, Ashish Mishra, who was believed to have been inside the car that killed protesting farmers. Junior minister had first skipped police summons triggering speculations that he had fled to Nepal.
