Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement to scrap old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on 8 November may have pushed millions into unspeakable hardships and pain, but the move has made one Sonam Gupta a celebrity. And Social media users are in splits for a change.

No, Sonam is neither a Bollywood actor or someone with a new-found fame on sporting arena. In fact, no one knows who this Sonam is except that she has now dominated the conversation on the microblogging site.

It all started with one user posting an old Rs 500 note, which had ‘Sonam Gupta Bewafa hai (Sonam Gupta is unfaithful).’ This prompted social media users to simply erupt in laughter with many posting similar quirky tweets to prove just how Sonam Gupta has remained ‘unfaithful’ even after the arrival of new currency notes in the market.

Our heartfelt apologies to everyone with the name Sonam Gupta in advance.
