Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered for state funeral of Sridevi


An RTI reply has revealed that it was Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who had ordered for the state funeral of Sridevi.

Quoting the reply from the General Administration Department’s Protocol Department of Maharashtra government RTI activist Anil Galgali said, “With regards to the full state honours for the late Amma Yangar Ayyappan, known as the famed actress Sridevi, verbal ordered were received from the CMO on February 25, 2018 and conveyed to the Mumbai Suburban District Collector and Mumbai Police Commissioner the following day to do the needful.”

The legendary actor had died in Dubai in late February due to ‘accidental drowning.’ She was in Dubai with her family to attend a relative’s wedding. Her sudden death had sent shock-waves across India and world.

Quoting the RTI reply, a report by IANS said that besides Sridevi, 40 other eminent personalities were given a funeral with full state honours between 22 June, 2012 and 26 March, 2018. They included former Chief Ministers and Union Ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh and A.R. Antulay, Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, Vipassana Guru Satyanarayan Goenka, Dawoodi Bohra spiritual head Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, former Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil, farmers leader and ex-MP Sharad Joshi, Marathi literatteur Mangesh Padgaonkar, former Union Minister Jaywantiben Mehta, senior journalist Muzaffar Hussain, and eminent cardiologist BK Goyal.

Regarding Sridevi’s funeral, a report by PTI said, a verbal order was received from the chief minister’s office on February 25, and it was conveyed to the Mumbai suburban collector and Mumbai police commissioner by a government order on 26 February.
