Chandigarh cop slaps man for filming his traffic rules violation, suspended after Manish Tewari intervenes


A cop in Chandigarh was suspended on Saturday after he was caught on camera hitting a member of public, who filmed him breaking traffic rules. The policeman was suspended for slapping a man, who filmed him talking on the phone while riding a bike.

In the video, the police official, identified as Surinder Singh, was seen riding his bike without properly wearing his helmet. The video once posted on social media platforms went viral. The incident took place on Friday at a dividing road of Chandigarh’s sector 36/37.

The matter assumed even more significance after former union minister and Congress leader Manish Tiwari posted the video from his Twitter handle with a firm message to police chief of the area.

Tagging the IG Police, Tewari wrote, “DGP Chandigarh Tejinder LUTHRA ji if video in this tweet is true plz suspend this police official for assaulting a Citizen.”


Chandigarh police SSP Traffic Shashank Anand said that the head constable had been suspended for misconduct and violating traffic norms, reported PTI. He was also challaned for not wearing his helmet properly and speaking on the phone while driving, the SSP said.

The driving license of the cop has been seized and it will be sent to the transport and licensing authority for suspension for three months, he said. The head constable was posted in the security wing of the Chandigarh police.

Tewari’s party colleague in Punjab, Ramandeep Singh, confirmed the action against the policeman through a tweet.
