The CBI on Sunday arrested former Assam Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia’s son Ashok Saikia in a 25-year-old alleged loan default case. The case pertains to a loan default case amounting to Rs. 9 lakh.
According to news agency PTI, the central government agency arrested Saikia after he reportedly failed to appear before a court despite a non-bailable warrant issued against him.
Saikia is likely to be produced before a court on Monday. He was arrested after being questioned by the CBI in Guwahati.
Saikia’s brother Debabrata Saikia is the leader of opposition in the Assam Assembly.
According to The Hindu, Saikia said that he was being victimised by the agency. “I have availed the loan from the ASCARD Bank in 1996 for a business. I have cleared the dues and H.N. Borah, the then general manager of the bank had in a letter on October 10, 2015, said the loan has been liquidated,” he was quoted as saying.
