The Mumbai Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal’s brother-in-law, Amit Ajit Gill, with regards to a cricket betting case.
Quoting a source close to the accused, Mumbai Mirror reported that Gill too had acted in a couple of recently released Hindi movies.
Mumbai Police Commissioner has reportedly ordered officials to conduct a crackdown on alleged betting cases. He has also instructed his officers to take strict action against the speculators, as well as those who act against speculators.
After Gill’s arrest, there are speculations that Rampal too may also be questioned by the investigating officers.
Following the orders, the police has started the clean up by cracking down on the spine of betting. In the past one week, approximately a dozen bookies have been arrested by the police and around six in the last month were arrested by the Bandra Crime Branch alone.
As per the sources, the alleged accused has been closely associated with a network of bookies, who have been recently arrested by the Crime Branch.
The Bandra Crime Branch had created a special software for betting, which was linked to a server in Holland. The bookies, reportedly rented out the software for betting purposes.
Nikhil Ganatra, a Thane resident, used to buy this software from Ashish Sharma of Borivali and then gave to his other associates related to betting. The cops sniffed the foul play and started doing their investigations with the information they gathered. This led to one arrest after another.
With simultaneous arrests of bookies, many other links are to be exposed in the coming days. The connection of Bollywood with betting in cricket has been under the scanner, however, it is premature to cast any allegations or join linkages with the current case.
Arjun Rampal is a former supermodel turned actor, married to ex Miss India, Mehr Jesia. Rampal is also a winner of National Award.
