Bridegroom, grandmother die after wedding gift explodes


A bridegroom and his grandmother were killed in Odisha after a gift they had received on their wedding reception exploded. The bride too has suffered serious injuries and is being treated at a hospital.

Quoting police, a report by PTI said that that the incident took place in Odisha’s Bolangir district on Friday. The bridegroom’s grandmother was killed on the spot while the bridegroom died at a hospital in Rourkela.

The bridegroom is identified as Soumya Sekhar Sahu, while his grandmother was named as Jemamani Sahu. Son of a lecturer Rabindra Kumar Sahu Bholanathpada, Soumya got married on 18 February.

The police is investigating the reason for the blasts and also identify the individual who had gifted the package to the couple. The cops are also trying to identify the materials wrapped inside the gift.

“The police have collected evidence and an investigation is on,” Patnagarh Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sesadeva Bariha was quoted as saying. Bariha told reports that the family members had received a parcel bomb in the guise of the gift packet on Friday which exploded while being opened.

The wife of the deceased, Reena Sahu, is battling for her life at Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla.
