Taking a dig at BJP’s stand on cows, the AIMIM president, Asaduddin Owaisi, on Saturday said that BJP’s ‘hypocrisy’ was that in Uttar Pradesh cow was ‘mummy’ but ‘in the Northeast its yummy.’
Speaking to ANI, Owaisi said, “BJP’s hypocrisy is that in Uttar Pradesh Cow is mummy but in the Northeast its yummy.”
The BJP last week had said that its stand on cow slaughter in Meghalaya and other north-eastern states were not connected to its crackdown on illegal abattoirs in Uttar Pradesh.
“This (cow slaughter ban) is an issue of a specific state, Uttar Pradesh, and is not even remotely connected to the party’s stand on the issue in Meghalaya in particular, or in any tribal-dominated state in the north-east,” state BJP chief Shibun Lyngdoh had told PTI.
In contrast to its stand on cows in Uttar Pradesh and other states, where the saffron party has been in government, the BJP had said that it will not ban cow slughter in Meghalaya if it won the elections.
Assembly polls are slated to be held in Meghalaya early next year, along with Nagaland and Mizoram.
This had prompted many to ridicule the party’s perceived hypocrisy on cows in an alleged bid to win elections.
However, Lyngdoh denied the allegation, “The rival parties try to sabotage the BJP with cheap tactics such as spreading rumours against it, whereas they in fact are under pressure. We are a force to reckon with for our pro-people policies and anti-corruption stand.”
The BJP government in Uttar Pradesh under Yogi Adityanath has gone full throttle in banning the slaughterhouses in the state. Police had also banned people from using buffalo meat for wedding parties and instead advised them to use chicken for guests.
