In a big blow to SC and ST students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Sunday increased fees of Class 10 and 12 board examinations from Rs 50 to Rs 1,200. The fees for general category students too have gone up from Rs 750 to Rs 750.

News agency PTI reported that under the revised norms, SC and ST students will have to pay Rs 1,200 for five subjects in comparison to Rs 50 that they paid in the past. A CBSE official was quoted as saying, “The fees are applicable for both Class 10 and 12 examinations.”

Students appearing for Class 10 board exams are required to register themselves when they are in Class 9. While students wishing to appear for Class 12 exams have to register when in Class 11. The CBSE issued the new circular last week directing students to charge additional amount from students if they had paid old fees during their registration.

ST and ST students will now have benefits compared to general category students on the fees for an additional subject in Class 12 exams. This has now been capped at Rs 300 for both the categories.

The CBSE has also increased the migration fees from Rs 150 to Rs 350. Migration certificates are needed when students move from one board to the other.

The fees for students enrolled in CBSE schools abroad have gone up from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000.
