Basavaraj Bommai named new chief minister of Karnataka

The BJP has announced the name of Basavaraj Bommai as the new chief minister of Karnataka. Bommai would replace BS Yediyurappa, who resigned from his post on Monday.

A close confidant of Yediyurappa, Bommai hails from the Sadara Lingayat community. Yediyurappa too belongs to the powerful Lingayat community.

An engineer by profession, Bommai had joined the Hindutva party in 2008. He had held the water resource ministry previously. His father  SR Bommai had served as the Karnataka chief minister in the past.
