At least 25 people have lost their lives in Mumbai after incessant rains and landslides hit the financial capital of India.

According to news agency PTI, 17 people died in Bharatnagar locality in Mumbai’s Mahul after a compound wall collapsed due to a landslide. The wall collapsed on other houses at around 1 AM.

Elsewhere, seven slum-dwellers died in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area, also due to a landslide amidst heavy rains that lashed the city overnight. In a separate incident, a 16-year-old boy was killed after a forest department compound wall collapsed in suburban Bhandup.

A statement from the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office said that Uddhav Thackeray had ‘expressed grief over the deaths in accidents at Chembur and Vikhroli due to torrential rains that started from midnight in Mumbai.’

A statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Office said that he was ‘saddened by the loss of lives due to wall collapses in Chembur and Vikhroli in Mumbai.’ “In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying that those who are injured have a speedy recovery,” Modi said.

Heavy rains have left several parts of Mumbai waterlogged.  Videos of Mumbai being inundated due to rains have gone viral on social media.
