BJP President Amit Shah on Monday made his debut speech in the Rajya Sabha several months after he was elected to the Upper House from Gujarat.

He spoke for 77 minutes and used the opportunity to attack the Congress on the growing unemployment gripping the country and Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s Gabbar Singh Tax jibe for the GST rollout.

On the growing unemployment, he blamed the Congress party’s years of governance at the Centre even though his own party has been in government for nearly four years now. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has widely been criticised for not fulfilling his election promise of providing 1 crore jobs every year.

He defended PM Modi’s comments on pakodas adding that selling the famous Indian snacks was also an employment and there was no shame attached to the profession. Independent MLA from Gujarat, Jignesh Mevani, wrote, “Yes but there’s shame in making money from just Rs 50,000 to over Rs 80,00,00,000 in a single year.”

#ShahSpeaksInRajyaSabha became a top Twitter trend moments after Shah started his speech with an overwhelming number of users mocking the BJP President for his alleged involvement in Judge Loya’s mysterious death and the phenomenal increase in his son’s wealth since the BJP came to power at the Centre.

Judge BS Loya was presiding over the case of Sohrabuddin Shaikh’s fake encounter, where Shah was a key accused, when he died in mysterious circumstances in November 2014 in Nagpur. The case surrounding his mysterious death is now being heard by the Supreme Court, where the petitioners have demanded an independent probe by the SIT.

Here is how the social media reacted to Shah’s maiden Rajya Sabha speech.
