Meeting organised at DU by AISA disrupted, ABVP workers allegedly attack women

A public meeting organised at DU by the left backed All India Students Association (AISA) was allegedly disrupted by the members of RSS student wing ABVP who also “roughed” up few members of the former group.

Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) president Amit Tanwar, an ABVP nominee, denied any allegations of attacking students or disrupting the meeting.

“ABVP members led by Tanwar entered the meet venue and tore down the posters and the pamphlets. They also attacked our DU unit’s president Kawalpreet Kaur and stopped Kavita Krishnan from speaking and police had to cancel the event,” Sunny Kumar, an AISA activist alleged.

The event titled “Idea of university” was organised by in support of ongoing movements for freedom of expression in various campuses across the country and in solidarity with the missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed.

Police officials, however, denied that the event was cancelled.

“We did not cancel any event. Police was present at the spot when AISA and ABVP supporters were indulging in slogan shouting. We tried to intervene when the slogan shouting was intensified by the groups and we feared altercation,” a senior police official said.

Activist Kavita Krishnan posted the video of the moment when the ABVP supporters attempted to disrupt the AISA meet.

She also tweeted, “AISA DUSU Presidential candidate Kawalpreet, other students injured by ABVP encouraged by Delhi Police in DU.”

A Delhi-based jouralist, Syed Hassan Kazim, too posted his eye-witness account on his Facebook page.

Kazim wrote, “Want to know about the level of thuggery BJP’s youth wing, basically a gang of goons ABVP can stoop too. Go to the Delhi University and see yourself where the goondas of ABVP vandalised a public meeting in the Arts Faculty which was to be addressed by Kavita Krishnan and Kawalpreet Kaur.

“They not only vandalised the event rather abused the students and organisers of the same while the Delhi police acted as just a mute spectator, did nothing rather seemed to be outnumbered. The journalists present at the event too were roughed up. If this is the state of affairs in Delhi University, lord knows which level of goondaism these state backed thugs and goons can stoop to in universities and colleges in far off districts. What the ABVP is doing is full fledged “gundagardi” rather than student politics.”
