Days after All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev left the Congress to join the Trinamool Congress in Assam, Tripura Congress chief Pijush Kanti Biswas has stunned the party leadership by resigning from his post.

Although Biswas said that he was retiring from active politics, there are speculations that he too may join Mamata Banerjee’s party. Biswas tweeted, “With sincere gratitude I thank all Congress Leaders, supporters for your cooperation during my tenure as TPCC President (acting). Today I have resigned from the post of President and retired from politics as well. My sincere gratitude towards Hon’ble CP Smt. Sonia Gandhiji.”

Reacting to Biswas’ resignation, Sushmita Dev wrote on Twitter, “Your tenure was tough… good luck for the future.”

According to news agency ANI, Biswas said that he was retiring from politics and ‘happy to go back to my profession.’

Analysts say that two big names leaving the party would be a huge blow to the Congress in the northeast region of India in time to come.
