Social media went into frenzy on Friday after one of India’s leading Hindi news channels, Aaj Tak, tweeted promoting a special programme called ‘Khaansi Returns (return of cough)’ scheduled to be broadcast at 4.28 pm the same day.

The news channel’s tweet read,

“Dilli ke mukhyamantri Arvind Kejriwal ki khaansi phir laut aayi hai. Aaj 4.28 baje dekhiye Khaansi Returns sirf Aaj Tak par (Delhi chief minister, Arvind Kejriwal’s cough has returned once again. Do watch Return of Cough at 4.28 pm only on Aaj Tak.”

The promotional image attached with the tweet also carried a collage of several photos of Kejriwal either coughing or using inhaler to stop his cough.

This angered Kejriwal’s supporters and many other social media users, who found this editorial in considerably poor taste with even likening it to sadism in journalism.

Some enraged Aam Aadmi Party supporters even tagged the India Today group’s chairman, Aroon Purie, on twitter registering their protests. Others contacted the group’s consulting editor, Rajdeep Sardesai, on twitter reminding him about the ethics in media that he stands for.

Aaj Tak is a leading Hindi news channel and is part of the India Today media group. Aam Aadmi Party has often accused the channel of carrying out an orchestrated agenda against the party and the Delhi government.

Not so long, the Delhi government headed by Kejriwal, had slapped the channel with a defamation notice amounting to Rs 500 crore for ‘spreading lies’ on so-called onion scam.
