27 school children killed as bus fall into gorge in Himachal Pradesh


In a tragic incident, at least 30 people including 27 children were killed after their school bus fell into a 100-feet-deep gorge in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra on Monday.

Kangra SP Santosh Patial said that among those killed also included the 67-year-old driver Madan Lal and two women teachers. The students travelling in the bus were mostly from Class 5 and below, of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial Public School.

A report by IANS said that they were returning home from school when their bus fell into the gorge near Gurchal village on the Nurpur-Chamba road, about 300 kilometre from the state capital.

Some of the seriously injured have been taken to hospital in Pathankot. There were around 80 students in the bus, while other reports said that the number of students travelling in the bus at the time of the accident was 60.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President condoled the tragic deaths of school students. Modi tweeted from his official account, “I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident.”

Gandhi, for his part tweeted, “I am deeply disturbed and saddened by the bus accident in Himachal, that has claimed many lives, including those of 26 children.
I urge our Congress party workers in Himachal to provide all the assistance they can, to the families of the victims and to those who are injured.”
