Upset after a school teacher scolded her for poor performance, a 17-year-old student in Tamil Nadu’s Erode District allegedly hanged herself on Monday. Following the incident, the girl’s parents and locals held a protest demanding arrest of the teacher.
The girl, who was a student of the Government Higher Secondary School in Thandaampalayam, had reportedly skipped classes for five days last week after her Zoology teacher Ms Eswari scolded her for a lackadaisical performance.
Following the girl’s return to school on Monday, the teacher demanded to see her parents and scolded her once again. The girl’s parents say that she was so ashamed after the scolding that she came home and committed suicide.
“She was a bright student. The teacher took her on for no reason. We want her arrested,” Appu Kutti, a relative told NDTV.
Police have registered a case of abetment of suicide.
“We are probing. The teacher says she had scolded her only in good intent,” senior police official MR Sibi Chakravarthy said.
