Two Sitas from Ramayan in one frame leaves fans spellbound

Remember Debina Bonnerjee, who shot to fame by playing the role of Sita in the modern version of Ramayan by Sagar Arts’ Ramayan in 2008? She fell in love with her co-star Gurmeet Choudhary on the sets of Ramayana, where he was playing the character of her husband Ram. Later they got married.

Ramayan of 2008 was the reversion of its original form, which was broadcast on Doordarshan in the late 80s by Ramananad Sagar. Arun Govil had played the role of Ram then, while Sita was played by Deepika Chikhalia.

Both the new age Sita and her inspiration for the role from the 80s recently bumped into each other. An ecstatic Debina was quick to capture the moment and flaunt her joy on Instagram. She wrote, “When #Sita meets Sita …….. How I savoured this moment of meeting you @dipikkatopiwala my first work #ramayana was on the foundation of seeing your DVDs , understanding, forming knowledge. #legend……………. lots of looooove.”

Fans loved the way two Sitas were captured in one frame. One user wrote, “Thanks for sharing this pic. I love her, but strangely never realised her name might be different Yeh toh Sita hai for me.” Another wrote, “As Sita you also looks more beautiful than Dipika mam. Your acting is also so natural. Whenever I pray God I feel you as Mata Sita.”

Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan ran without any interruption for two years between 1986 and 1988 on Doordarshan. The show was broadcast every Sunday morning. This was long before the age of private TV channels. Doordarshan was the only channel available to Indians. Such was the craze for the show that people would hire car batteries to operate their TVs in the absence of electricity in villages and small towns.

Last month, Deepika posted a few throwback photos of herself from Ramayan series with a caption ‘Moods’

Arun Govil and Deepika were treated like Gods along with other characters of the epic series as they travelled across the country. Govil and Deepika later joined the BJP. Deepika was even elected to the Lok Sabha on a BJP ticket from Vadodara. She also acted in a few Bollywood films before she got married to a Mumbai-based businessman Hemant Topiwala.

She will soon be seen in Bollywood film Ghaalib.
