Tributes pour in on music legend Khayyam’s death at 92


Tributes poured in after Indian music legend Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi, popularly known as Khayyam, passed away in Mumbai on Monday. He was 92.


The music maestro was best known for his classic compositions such as Kabhi Kabhie and Umrao Jaan. A family friend told news agency PTI that Khayyam was being treated at a hospital in Mumbai after he complained of breathing problems a few days ago. The music legend died at Sujay Hospital at around 9.30 pm on Monday.

News agency IANS reported that Khayyam was survived by his singer wife Jagjit Kaur.

Reacting to the news Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “India will remain grateful to Khayyam Sahab for giving us some of the most memorable compositions, which will be remembered forever. He will also be remembered for his humanitarian gestures to support upcoming artists. His demise is extremely saddening.”

Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar wrote, “Khayyam saheb the great music director has passed away . He has given many all time great song but to make him immortal only one was enough ‘voh subah kabhi to aayehi’.”

Music maestro AR Rahman wrote on Twitter while sharing a link on Khayyam’s life, “A True Patriot and a Master Songwriter…Mohammed Zahur Khayyam.”

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar wrote on Twitter, “Great musician and a man with a kind heart, Khayyam sahab isn’t with us anymore. I am so saddened to hear this, I can’t put it in words. With Khayyam sahab, an era of music has ended. I offer my humble tribute to him.”

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who acted in many hit films, whose music was composed by Khayyam, tweeted, “a legend in music .. a soft spoken amiable soul .. one that contributed to several films and some of the more important ones of mine .. passes away .. KHAYAM sahib .. for all the memorable music he conducted and produced .. prayers condolences.”

Recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan (the country’s third-highest civilian award), Khayyam also won the National Award and Filmfare Award. The musician’s other notable works included films such as Trishul, Noorie and Shola Aur Shabnam.
