The news of Pakistani presenter Zainab Abbas being deported by India midway through her Cricket World Cup assignment has set the internet on fire.

This was after it emerged that Abbas was deported from India due to her past tweets mocking Hindu faith.

In one of tweets in the past, Abbas had allegedly written, “hahaha true it does man went delhi and it smells of cow piss. Ooops that’s their maaaaa kaali ma. (sic).”

Right-wing supporters had fervently shared her controversial tweets from the past and asked the Indian government to act against her. Abbas was in India as part of the ICC commentators for the ongoing Cricket World Cup.

However, the ICC has reportedly denied the claims that Abbas was deported back to Pakistan. ICC spokesperson C. Rajshekhar Rao told Arab News, “She has left for a personal reason and was not deported.”

Pakistani media reported that Abbas returned to Pakistan owing to her personal safety. Pakistan’s Samaa TV tweeted, “Pakistani sports presenter Zainab Abbas has safely exited India over “safety concerns”. She is currently in Dubai; allegations involve #cybercrime and old anti-India tweets.”

The news of Abbas leaving India comes amidst reports that Pakistani journalists and cricket fans were still waiting for visa by Indian authorities for the world cup.
