US banking giant, Citibank, has sacked one of its employees for her alleged antisemitic social media on Israel’s war crimes against Palestinians in Gaza. Citibank said in a social media post that it had terminated the contract with Nozima Husainova after supporters of Israel registered outrage.

Israel has been facing global condemnation for committing war crimes against innocent civilians and children in Gaza after Hamas fighters killed more than 1,400 Israelis in their surprise attacks on 7 October. The US and the UK have declared Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

More than 1,000 innocent people were brutally killed in an Israeli air strike, which destroyed a hospital in Gaza. Most of the victims were children and babies. Faced with international condemnation and future consequences for war crimes, Israel later backtracked and blamed Hamas and Islamic Jihad for the attack.

Reacting to Israeli brutalities in Gaza, Husainova wrote on Instagram, “No wonder why Hitler wanted to get rid of all of them.”

Her post evoked angry reactions from the supporters of the Israeli government as they accused Husainova of being an antisemite.

Twitter handle, Stop Antisemitism, tweeted, “”No wonder why Hitler wanted to get rid of all of them”. – Nozima Husainova. Unbridled antisemitism.”

Taking note of social media outrage, Citibank first said that it was looking in the matter. “We are investigating this matter and taking appropriate disciplinary action. We strongly condemn antisemitism and other hate speech,” it wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

It later confirmed that Husainova’s contract had been terminated. It wrote, “Update: We terminated the employment of the person who posted the revolting antisemitic comment on social media. We condemn antisemitism and all hate speech and do not tolerate it in our bank.”
