Hindutva supporters have demanded action from the Information and Broadcasting ministry for a tweet posted by news agency PTI on the death of Lata Mangeshkar. Enraged by the news flash, Hindutva supporters urged I&B Minister Anurag Thakur to act against PTI as some of them praised the tone of reporting in the Pakistani media.

The news flash by PTI had read, “Lata Mangeshkar is dead, sister Usha Mangeshkar tells PTI.”

What appear to enrage BJP supporters was the absence of ‘ji’ while referring Mangeshkar in the PTI news flash. Some of them also took offence to the use of the word ‘dead.’

Others used a news flash by Pakistan’s state broadcaster, PTV, to drive home a point on the need to accord respect to Mangeshkar. The headline by PTV had read, “Legendary Indian singer, #LataMangeshkar whose voice enchanted generations of music lovers the world over, has passed away at the age of 92.”

Here’s how angry Hindutva supporters reacted;

Mangeshkar died on Sunday after being hospitalised for nearly a month in Mumbai. Last month, she had developed pneumonia and COVID symptoms. She had to be placed on a ventilator. She was taken off the ventilator late last month on an experiment basis before being placed on that again when her condition deteriorated.

There were rumours about her health last month when Union Minister Smriti Irani and Mangeshkar’s family members had to issue desperate pleas urging people to not spread rumours.
