India’s right-wing brigade has demanded an apology from News 24 TV channel after the Uttar Pradesh Police said that the media outlet had carried fake news about a woman.
News 24 TV channel

It all started with News 24 running a news flash claiming that a husband had committed a shameful act of losing his wife in gambling on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, which is a part of the festival of Diwali. The news flash by News 24 read, “A husband mortgages his wife after losing in gambling. The incident is from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh. The woman’s brother comes to her rescue, a case is registered.”

The media outlet also shared a photo of a sari-clad woman with a caption that read, “Husband loses his wife in gambling on Dhanteras.”

Reacting the news flash of News 24 TV, the Amroha Police wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, “In relation to the above case, please be informed that on the basis of the complaint filed by the applicant, a case has been registered against her husband Suhail Ahmed and her in-laws under dowry harassment and other relevant sections and advance legal proceedings are underway.”

The tweet by the Amroha Police made it clear that the woman in question was Muslim and there was no Dhanteras angle involved as Muslims did not observe the festival of Diwali and its related rituals.

Soon, angry Hindu social media users took to Twitter to demand an apology from News 24, which deleted the objectionable tweet after being corrected by the Amroha Police.
