Elena Rybakina defeats Ons Jabeur to win maiden Wimbledon singles title

Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan defeated Ons Jabeur of Tunisia 3-6 6-2 6-2 to win her maiden Wimbledon singles title.

Jabeur won the first set 6-3 without much struggle. Elena Rybakina staged a fight back in the second set as she broke Jabeur in her very first service game. Jabeur appeared to suddenly lose momentum and kept losing easy points, giving Rybakina a 4-1 lead in the second set. The Kazakh player eventually won the set 6-2.

Rybakina built the pressure even in the deciding set and wrapped up the match without much fight from Jabeur. No one quite knew what triggered such an extraordinary turnaround in the match for Jabeur, who completely forgot her game after winning the first set.

Jabeur had defeated her friend, Tatjana Maria, 6-2 3-6 6-1 in the semi-final. The Tunisian was very emotional after the win and had taken Maria to the court after the match as she urged the fans to applaud the performance of her opponent.

Jabeur was seen as very emotional before walking on to the court. Jabeur and her husband Karim Kamoun were seen hugging each other before the start of the match. Kamoun also works as Jabeur’s coach.

The Tunisian player had reached the final by losing just one set along the way.
