Actor Sonu Sood has found support from the Trinamool Congress and the Congress party after the Income Tax department raided at least six properties linked to him in Mumbai and Lucknow on Wednesday.

A report by news agency PTI said that the visit of IT officials to the Bollywood actor’s properties was linked to a tax evasion probe. IT officials, who also visited Sonu’s residence, are reportedly probing a deal between the actor and a real estate company.

Interestingly, Wednesday’s raids came just days after Sonu met AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The Delhi government later announced Sonu as its brand ambassador for its mentorship programme.

Reacting to the IT raids on Sonu’s properties, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate tweeted, “Raiding @SonuSood is a sign of desperation. Grow up Mr Modi and Mr Shah. However, this should be a badge of honour Sonu Sood, you surely did somethings right to upset the duo. #SonuSood.”

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra wrote on Twitter, “Sonu Sood raided by IT @SonuSood…. No surprise now that he’s officially aligned with
@AamAadmiParty. Is ED next? Come on, tell us @BJP.”

AAP spokesperson Raghav Chadha tweeted, “This is nothing but a witch hunt by an insecure government against a giant philanthropist considered a ‘messiah’ by millions. His only crime is that he worked for the welfare of downtrodden when they were orphaned by the state.”

Sonu had become a national hero or sorts after he led an extraordinary campaign to help people in distress, desperate to return homes following an unplanned nationwide lockdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
