Bombay Velvet tanks at box office

Though it opened amid much fanfare and speculation, Bombay Velvet left critics cold and the first week box office collections have been unsatisfactory.

The Anurag Kashyap directed crime-drama starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar, is set in the 1960s Bombay. Based on historian Gyan Prakash’s book “Mumbai Fables”, the film takes inspiration from the crime-thriller “The Roaring Twenties” , subtly presenting iconic retro Bollywood scenes in a darker tone.

Despite high expectations prior to its release, the movie is already being declared a flop. The first week business added to only 8.5 crore. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh pronounced the film a disaster tweeting,”#BombayVelvet Fri 5.20 cr. India biz. D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R”.

Anurag Kashyap reacted through Facebook saying, “Maybe our experimenting with the narrative didn`t work for most but i firmly believe in the film. This is the film i wanted to make and i am glad i got to make it. No i am not depressed or hiding, this has taught us a lot and is my absolute personal favourite, there have been no regrets whatsoever.”

Shoojit Sircar’s Piku, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irfaan Khan is picking up pace. For Bombay Velvet however, it is much ado about nothing.
