The Delhi High Court on Friday sentenced actor Rajpal Yadav to 3-month civil prison in a case related to Rs 5 crore loan he had taken in 2010. Moments after the High Court pronounced its verdict, the Delhi Police took the actor into custody.

Yadav was accused by a Delhi businessman MG Agarwal of failing to repay a loan of Rs. 5 crore, which Yadav & his wife Radha had taken in 2010 to make his directorial debut with Hindi film Ata Pata Laapata.

The film was released in 2012 but bombed at the box office. Among other stars in the film were Asrani, Om Puri, Ashutosh Rana, Manoj Joshi, Govind Namdeo, Dara Singh, Vikram Gokhale, Vijay Raaz, and Satyadev Dubey.

In July, the Supreme Court had warned the actor that he may have to spend six days in the Tihar jail in the event that he could not pay the loans back to the businessman. Yadav’s response at the outset that he has no money to pay back had irked the bench comprising Justices Kurian Joseph and R F Nariman which said, “no further arguments. You have got rid of murder…We were thinking of sending you to jail for six months.”

Yadav had spent four days in jail from December 3, 2013 till December 6, 2013 after which a division bench of the High Court had suspended the sentence on his appeal.

On 25 July , the apex court had pulled up Yadav for not paying money despite giving repeated undertakings before court, saying his conduct in the case was “inexplicable”.

The High court had upheld the sentence awarded by a single judge in December 2013, saying Yadav’s “failure to follow procedure cannot be countenanced” as despite being given adequate time to explain his conduct “he resorted to falsehood”.
