Rampur has been a fiefdom for the Samajwadi Party with Azam Khan representing the seat in the past. The by-poll was triggered by Khan’s resignation.
Another seat going for Lok Sabha by-poll in Uttar Pradesh was Azamgarh, where BJP’s Dinesh Lal Yadav “Nirahua” was leading over Samajwadi Party’s Dharmendra Yadav by over 12,000 votes.
