Police in England say that at least one person was killed in a car explosion outside the Liverpool Women’s Hospital. Another person is believed to have sustained injuries.

According to the Merseyside Police, the explosion took place at 10.59 AM on Sunday.

“We can confirm that an incident occurred at around 11am today outside #Liverpool Women’s Hospital. A cordon has been established and a number of roads closed. Emergency services currently at the scene assessing the situation. More as we get it,” the Merseyside Police said in a tweet.

The car in question is reported to be a taxi that exploded moments after arriving outside the hospital.

The hospital said that it had restricted access for patients briefly as police investigated the explosion. “We are reviewing our patient activity for the next 24-48 hours and patients should wait to be contacted for updates about any planned appointments or other attendance at the hospital,” Kathryn Thomson, chief executive of Liverpool Women’s Hospital, was quoted by BBC.

Liverpool mayor Joanna Anderson tweeted, “The incident at the #Liverpool Women’s Hospital is unsettling and upsetting and my thoughts are with those affected. I’d like to thank the emergency services for their swift response and for bringing calm to the situation.”

The Liverpool Women’s Hospital receives at least 50,000 patients every year.
