In the viral video, a woman in red saree could be seen trying to enter the polling station when she is stopped by a group of goons, who grab her by her saree before assaulting her.

Ritu Singh, the Samajwadi candidate, told ANI about the incident, “I went to file my nomination, but they tore off my nomination paper. They ran off with my purse&tore my clothes. Police was on the scene & did nothing. They were Rekha Verma’s goons.”

Akhilesh Yadav shared the video with a caption that read, “Power-hungry goons of Yogi (Adityanath). Insulting a woman to win elections.”

Twitter erupted with anger with members of civil society attacking the BJP government. Some even poked fun at the National Commission for Women for remaining a mute spectator at the incident.

Uttar Pradesh goes to polls in February next year. The BJP government’s inept handling of the pandemic and deteriorating law and order are going to be some of the key election issues.
