Olympic medallist boxer Vijender Singh is Congress’ candidate from South Delhi Lok Sabha seat

The Congress on Monday fielded boxer Vijender Singh as its Lok Sabha candidate from the South Delhi parliamentary seat. The Olympic medal winner boxer will face Raghav Chadha of the AAP and Ramesh Bidhuri of the BJP for the 12 May elections.

A release by the Congress said, “The Central Election Committee has approved the candidature of Shri Vijender Singh as Congress candidate to contest the ensuing general elections to the Lok Sabha from 7-South Delhi Parliamentary constituency of NCT of Delhi.”

The Olympic and world championship medallist boxer had turned pro in 2015.

Earlier, the BJP also fielded former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir as its candidate from East Delhi Lok Sabha seat.

Delhi has seven Lok Sabha seats with all being won by the BJP in 2014. This year, elections to these seven seats are scheduled for 12 May. The counting will take place on 23 May.
