UAE government grants Zayed Medal to PM Modi

The UAE government on Thursday granted the ‘Zayed Medal’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving ‘boost’ to the bilateral ties between India and the UAE.

Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, wrote on Twitter, “We have historical and comprehensive strategic ties with India, reinforced by the pivotal role of my dear friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who gave these relations a big boost. In appreciation of his efforts, the UAE President grants him the Zayed Medal.”

Usually, this prize is awarded to heads of state in person without any announcement in advance. Local correspondents say that the announcement may have been made to prevent Modi’s proposed visit to Abu Dhabi for the foundation laying ceremony of a Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi.

Many former diplomats had on Wednesday advised Crown Prince against Modi’s visit during the Lok Sabha elections.

Former diplomat KC Singh criticised the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia for helping Modi extract the much-needed electoral mileage in the elections. Singh wrote on Twitter, “News today Modi likely to inaugurate Abu Dhabi Temple in April. Code of Conduct ? Crown princes of AbuDhabi/SArabia playing a dangerous game by pitching behind Modi. Foreign nations should absolutely avoid direct/indirect interference in Indian polls.”
